Dear Parents/Guardians,

Construction is well underway on the new middle school, Evanston Heights, with an expected opening date of September 2026. It will be the designated Regular Program school for students living in the community of Evanston in Grades 4 to 8. Grade 9 will be added the following school year.

The school is located at 221 Evanston Drive NW.

The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is committed to keeping students closer to home and reducing transitions between schools. These changes help support stronger community connections and a more stable learning experience for students.

The principal for Evanston Heights School will be announced spring 2026.

Note, Evanston Heights School is anticipated to be at capacity and will only accommodate students living within the community of Evanston. Out-of-attendance area students will not be accepted.

Why am I receiving this notice?

According to CBE records, you live in the Evanston community, and your child(ren) or current school may be impacted by the new school opening. This notice will provide you with the information you need to know.

Who can attend Evanston Heights School?

Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, students who live within the Evanston boundary (map attached) will go to Evanston Heights School for Grades 4 to 8, including:

  • Grades 3 and 4 students currently at Kenneth D. Taylor or Cambrian Heights
  • Grades 5 to 7 students currently at Simon Fraser or William D. Pratt

Note, Grade 9 will be added the next school year, beginning 2027. This means, if your child is currently in Grade 8, they will stay at their current school for Grade 9 for the 2026–27 school year. No action is needed.

What are the designations and grade changes?

  • Overflow designation for Evanston students from Simon Fraser to William D. Pratt will remain in place for the current Grade 8 students, for the 2026-27 school year. The overflow will be removed in June 2027.
  • Kenneth D. Taylor School will become a kindergarten to Grade 3 school starting September 2026.
  • Cambrian Heights will continue to be an overflow receiver, as needed, for Kenneth D Taylor for students in kindergarten to Grade 3.
  • A second elementary school has been approved for Evanston and is awaiting construction. More information will be shared during the 2026–27 school year.

  • If your child is currently enrolled in an alternative or language program in Grades 3 to 7 and you want them to attend Evanston Heights School, you must inform your current principal of the intent to transfer to the Regular Program.
  • All students new to the CBE who live in Evanston and will be attending Evanston Heights School, will need to register online.

Registration for the 2026-27 school year starts in January 2026. For more information on how to register, please visit our website.

I live in Evanston and want to keep my child at their current school. What do I need to do?

CBE students interested in attending a school other than their designated school may request a transfer. Information on the transfer process is available at ECS, Kindergarten - Grade 9 Transfers.

How will students get to school?

Students are eligible for transportation to their designated school if they live beyond the walk zone, but within the attendance area. Please note transportation for middle and junior high school students can include yellow school bus service or Calgary Transit. Visit Busing & Transportation for more information. Service levels and fees will be confirmed by May 2026.
