Engaging and Inspiring Since 1957

Historically, the school has undergone two developments since its original structure in 1957. We boast an expansive creative playground and naturalization area which were built by our School Council and families. The school has numerous instructional spaces in use, as well as a gymnasium, and the Learning Commons.

Cambrian Heights has established a vibrant team teaching environment in which blended grade teams create collaborative learning spaces and flexible learning groups throughout the building. We are a diverse and inclusive learning community dedicated to advancing personalized learning through rich meaningful tasks and cross curricular inquiry-based projects. We take pride in our strong literacy program and are also making a whole school commitment to intentionally focus on numeracy.

We have experienced great success in moving teaching and learning forward through our School Development Plans in Literacy and Mathematics. Some of the strategies we have implemented to support students include:

  • The "I do, We do, You do" model to balance direct instruction, practice, and thinking tasks
  • A Learning Target approach to ensure that success criteria are clearly established for each student
  • Personalized tasks based on 4-6 week learning cycles with a pre/post assessment model
  • One hour per day of disciplinary math, with a balance of direct instruction, 'low floor/high ceiling' open ended mathematics problems, basic skills practice, and the use of manipulatives
  • The use of Number Talks
  • An inclusive learning environment that meets the needs of each student, including those within our Specialized Setting programs
  • The use of the Zones of Regulation program and strategies for self-regulation
  • The Peaceful Problem-Solving approach to resolve interpersonal differences
Central to our beliefs is that an atmosphere of respect, compassion and responsibility in a safe and caring environment promotes optimum learning.

We are most fortunate to have a strong Parent Council/ School Association which help ensure our learning environment has support in financing all technologies and in seizing all opportunities possible.

School Development Plan

Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

School Improvement Results Report

Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year. It shows our students’ achievement and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes as set out by the CBE and Alberta Education, outlines some of the highlights of our school development plan and gives an overview of our school. You can look on the CBE website for system-wide results.
