School Update:

Students Lead Our Truth and Reconciliation Assembly

Our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation assembly honoured the learning students have shared across our school over the past two weeks. Our gathering also acknowledged the Fall Equinox. Through teachings shared by Indigenous community members, we have learned about the importance of coming together as the seasons change to notice and honour the changes taking place around us, reflect on our relationship with the land, and welcome the season ahead.

Grade 4, 5 and 6 Indigenous student leaders Aria, Reegan and Liam opened the event with a smudge and shared teaching about its purpose. Grade 5 students Maddie and Dexter then offered land acknowledgements.

Students from several grades shared learning on a range of related topics. Grade 3 student Ruby reflected on what her class learned about Phyllis Webstad and the origins of Orange Shirt Day. She also shared the class’s orange handprints, each accompanied by writing about why every child matters, along with descriptions of the positive character traits that make each student unique. Grade 6 students Ayaan and Daniel shared visual journal pages about ReconciliACTION and their personal commitments connected to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action.

It was powerful to see students lead the assembly and honour their learning by sharing it with our school community. Their voices, reflections, and commitments remind us that reconciliation grows through learning, listening, and action.

Flag Football Fun with the Calgary Stampeders!

Students took part in a Calgary Crew flag football residency, thoughtfully organized by our phenomenal Physical Education and Wellness teacher, Greg Sadowsky, and made possible through the generous support of our School Council.

Calgary Crew is a grassroots sport initiative of the Calgary Flames Foundation where trained instructors visit schools across Southern Alberta to lead multi-day physical education residencies in floor hockey and flag football. During our residency, students practised passing, catching, running routes, and pulling flags. Then on Friday, students had the privilege of learning alongside Calgary Stampeders players Dedrick Mills and 2-time Grey Cup champion Dejon Brissett.

Experiences like this bring experts into our school and give students the chance to learn new skills, ask questions, and connect their learning to the world beyond the classroom. We are grateful to Mr. Sadowsky, our School Council, the Calgary Crew instructors, and the Calgary Stampeders for joining our students on the field.

School Safety Patrol Training Begins Tuesday

Starting Tuesday, October 6, our Grade 5 and 6 students will begin training as School Safety Patrol leaders. They’ll carry on a Calgary tradition that began in 1937 at Haultain School, where students wore sashes made from flour sacks and helped classmates cross the street safely. The program soon expanded to schools across Alberta and grew into today’s AMA School Safety Patrol.

With staff support, our Cambrian Heights School patrol leaders help students cross Northmount Drive, which is busy with traffic each morning. Please help keep the area safe by slowing down near the school, keeping the staff parking lot clear, and using the designated drop-off areas. The parking lot is not a student drop-off zone. This morning, a vehicle entered after the bell to drop off a student, then a second vehicle followed and blocked the sidewalk, then had to back out onto the street to make room. Situations like this put students and other road users at risk.

We’ve also seen parents and children not using the marked cross walk and running with their child across Northmount Drive. Please take the extra time to walk to the crosswalk and cross safely together. Once our School Safety Patrol begins next week, please be patient with our student patrollers, follow their directions, and help us keep our community safe.

Join Us at School Council!

We had a great turnout at last night’s School Council meeting, with many families joining online and others attending in person. Our Grade 6 teachers shared examples of student learning and spoke about instruction in Math, Literacy, and Social Studies. Ms. Laberee Lee and I provided an administrative update, and families had the opportunity to ask questions and share feedback.

The School Council executive also provided updates on finances and fundraising.  The Council is looking for volunteers to support its casino fundraiser in January. Casino fundraising raises close to $100,000 to support our school and students.

School Council meetings are a valuable way to stay informed, hear about the learning happening at Cambrian Heights, ask questions, and contribute your perspective. We encourage families to join us either in person or online.

Have a fantastic Fall weekend!

Sincerely,

Todd Webber

Principal, Cambrian Heights School
