School Update:
Grade 6 Outdoor School at Camp Chief Hector
On Thursday, our Grade 6 students returned from an incredible three-night Outdoor School experience at Camp Chief Hector YMCA, and what a success it was! Throughout their time at camp, students had opportunities to learn beyond the four walls of the classroom while building confidence, resilience, independence, and connection with one another
Students explored nature and participated in a wide range of outdoor learning experiences including wilderness navigation, improvised shelter building, learning different types of fire building techniques, team challenges, and outdoor recreation activities. Along the way, students also developed important social and leadership skills as they learned to collaborate, solve problem problems, support one another, and step outside of their comfort zones.
At Cambrian Heights School, we believe experiences like Outdoor School matter deeply. These are often the moments students remember for years to come, and provide experiences that help build lifelong friendships, create lasting memories, and foster personal growth through connection with community and the natural world. We were proud to begin this tradition last year and are even more proud to continue it this year as an important part of the Grade 6 experience at CHS.
A very special thank you goes to our staff who dedicated three full days and nights to supporting students at camp. These are long days away from their own families, but our staff remain deeply committed to serving our community and creating meaningful opportunities for children to grow, belong, and thrive.
We would also like to sincerely thank our families for placing their trust in us. For many students, this was their very first time sleeping away from home without their families, which is a significant milestone. We are so proud of the bravery, growth, and maturity students demonstrated throughout the experience.
This year at camp, our Grade 6 students wrote postcards to our current Grade 5 students sharing what to expect and helping build excitement for next year’s Outdoor School experience. We are already looking forward to continuing this growing CHS tradition again next year!
Grade 5 Sharing Assembly
This week, our Grade 5 students proudly hosted a wonderful sharing assembly showcasing the engaging learning experiences they have been part of over the past several weeks. Students from Mr. Macdonald’s, Mr. Dang’s, and Ms. Bower and Ms. Frohlich’s classes demonstrated tremendous creativity, confidence, and collaboration as they shared their learning with families, staff, and peers.
The assembly began with a creative shadow play performance featuring puppets and narration connected to students’ learning about Ancient China. Through storytelling and dramatic presentation, students shared the origins of the silk trade, the story of the Silk Road, and the importance of silk to the global economy and cultural exchange.
Students then presented a meaningful Readers Theatre focused on Indigenous teachings and the lessons animals can teach us. Through their performances, students explored the Buffalo and its connection to respect, the Bear and its connection to bravery, and the Raven and its connection to honesty. All these animals are closely connected to the core values we strive to foster each day at Cambrian Heights School.
The learning continued with presentations connected to Science and living systems, where students shared information about the functions of the brain, lungs, stomach, intestines, skeleton, muscles, kidneys, and immune system. It was wonderful to see students confidently explaining complex scientific concepts to an audience.
Students also brought energy and excitement to the gym through an interactive French animal charades activity that invited audience participation and encouraged everyone to respond in French.
The assembly concluded with a joyful musical performance of You Are My Sunshine, accompanied by students playing ukuleles.
Opportunities like these are incredibly valuable for students. Sharing assemblies allow children to build confidence, strengthen communication skills, celebrate their learning, and experience the pride that comes from presenting to an authentic audience. At Cambrian Heights School, we are always excited to create opportunities for students to showcase their learning and talents in meaningful ways.
A sincere thank you to all of the families who were able to attend and support our students today. Your presence helps make these experiences even more special for our children.
Investing in Our Outdoor Spaces and Community Connections
This week, we had several much-needed asphalt repairs around the school grounds. The work included repairing damaged sections of pavement and installing a new pathway connecting our compound to the playground area, helping improve wheelchair accessibility.
These improvements are about much more than asphalt repairs. At Cambrian Heights School, we know our outdoor spaces are an important gathering place for the broader community. Throughout the evenings and weekends, it is wonderful to see families using the playground, children riding bikes and playing basketball, and neighbours connecting in the space around the school. Investing in these areas is also an investment in the community that surrounds us.
Our next steps will include adding the remaining basketball court lines, refreshing more of the compound games, and adding lines for a portable pickleball court setup, creating even more opportunities for activity, recreation, and connection for both our students and the wider Cambrian Heights community.
Cambrian Heights Community Association Family Bike Day
The Cambrian Heights Community Association is excited to host its Annual Family Bike Day on Saturday, May 30 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the community centre. Families can enjoy free bike tune-ups, activities, and community fun throughout the day.
We are grateful for the strong partnership we continue to share with the Cambrian Heights Community Association. As close neighbours who share community spaces and a commitment to supporting local families, we deeply value the opportunities to work together in creating positive experiences for children and the broader community.
