School Update:
STEM Night + Book Fair = Warm Hearts on a Very Cold Evening!
A huge thank you to all our families who braved the extreme cold to join us for our Community STEM Night and Book Fair. The temperature outside may have been frigid, but the energy inside was anything but!
This year, families stepped into the role of playground designers with a very important task: creating a swing for a rubber duck. Yes…a rubber duck! The playful provocation was intentional. When the challenge feels a little unexpected, it invites imagination, lowers the pressure, and sparks creative problem-solving. With three different duck sizes and a limited set of materials, families worked together to design, test, adjust, and improve their creations.
The results were incredible. We saw thoughtful planning, scientific thinking, teamwork, perseverance, and plenty of joyful laughter. Families moved through the STEM process naturally – imagining, designing, building, testing, and refining – all while strengthening connections with one another and with our school community.
Events like this remind us that learning is most powerful when it brings people together. Thank you for building, creating, reading, and connecting with us.
Be sure to check out our Instagram page @Cambrian_Heights_CBE to see photos of the amazing duck swings in action!
Buddy Day: Learning Together for Black History Month
This past Thursday, our school came together for another meaningful Buddy Day. On Buddy Days, each class partners with another, often pairing older students with younger students, to take part in a shared activity connected to a common school-wide theme. These days are always special, as they create space for leadership, mentorship, and connection across grade levels.
Our focus for this Buddy Day was Black History Month. Classes engaged in a variety of learning experiences, including exploring the work and impact of Black artists and musicians. For example, Ms. Kaur’s Grade 2/3 class partnered with Ms. Andrew’s Grade 4 class to create vibrant artwork inspired by Alma Thomas. The collaboration, creativity, and care shown in their pieces were truly impressive, and you can see samples of their work displayed on our Black History Month bulletin board.
Buddy Days remind us that learning is richer when we learn together. They build empathy, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging across our school community.
A Little Help with Extra Pants, Please!
With the cold weather sticking around, and puddle season just around the corner, we are finding that many students are needing a change of clothes during the school day. Snow play, surprise slips, and the irresistible temptation of puddles (even with our gentle reminders to stay dry!) often lead to soaked pants and chilly legs.
Our supply of loaner clothing, especially pants, is running quite low.
If you have any gently used pants that your child has outgrown and would be willing to donate, we would be incredibly grateful. Having a small stash on hand helps us quickly support students, keep them comfortable, and get them back to learning with minimal disruption. Thank you in advance for helping to take care of our school community in such practical and generous ways. It truly makes a difference.
With gratitude,
Todd Webber
