School Update:
Welcome Back!!!
What a great first week! The building feels alive again, full of laughter, curiosity, and those first-week jitters that turn into confidence by the fourth day. Seeing students reconnect with old friends, welcome new classmates, and jump into learning has been a highlight of my week.
As we begin this school year, we’re excited to build on the successes of 2024-25 and take what we learned from your feedback to make CHS an even better place to learn and grow. Last year, I heard how much families appreciated strong communication, engaging school events, and meaningful learning experiences. You can expect more of that this year – including the return of some favourite traditions like our Winter Celebration and Bake Sale (Yes – it’s happening again!).
Our Cougars Corner Weekly Update will continue to be your go-to spot for key dates, school news, and updates from our Cambrian Heights Parent Association. These weekly notes are meant to keep you connected to what’s happening inside our classrooms and across the school.
Our teachers have been intentional this week about setting students up for success – establishing routines, building relationships, and sparking curiosity. We know these first weeks lay the foundation for a strong year of growth, and I couldn’t be prouder of the work happening in classrooms already.
As always, I welcome your questions, feedback, and ideas. We are here to support every child and every family, and we value your partnership as we work together to make 2025–26 a year of learning, connection, and celebration.
Thank you for a fantastic start!
Our Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation
Each year, all schools in the Calgary Board of Education establish a Commitment to Action as part of our ongoing work toward Truth and Reconciliation. This year at Cambrian Heights School, our focus is on engaging in land-based learning and bringing Indigenous knowledge, arts, singing, dancing, and cultural practices into our school in ways that are relevant, meaningful, and connected to student learning.
One of the first ways we lived this commitment was by preparing our school for a positive start to the year. I want to extend a sincere thank you to parents Lucas Cowston and Donycha Koronko, who graciously gave their time last Sunday to come to the school and smudge every learning space in our building.
What I have learned is that smudging is a sacred tradition practiced by many Indigenous peoples, involving the burning of dried medicines gathered from the earth. The four most common sacred medicines used in Indigenous
ceremonies are tobacco, sage, cedar, and sweetgrass. Smudging is an important spiritual practice that promotes cleansing, healing, and well-being. Having each of our classrooms, hallways, and gathering spaces smudged before students returned allowed us to clear away any negativity from the past and start the school year in a good way.
This experience reminds us that reconciliation is not a single event, but a continuous journey of learning, respect, and relationship-building – one we look forward to deepening with students, staff, parents, and community partners throughout the 2025-26 school year.
Have a wonderful weekend!
