School Update:

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Assembly

This week, our school came together for a very meaningful National Day for Truth and Reconciliation assembly. We began in a good way with a smudge led by Lucas and Dee Cowston, their son Liam, and daughter Miah.

We were also honoured to welcome Tessa Nepoose and Russel Courterille and their children, Kayleigh, Kenzleigh, and Ramone, who shared the beauty and strength of Powwow dancing. Kayleigh and Kenzleigh performed Fancy Shawl Dance, symbolizing transformation and renewal, while Ramone performed Chicken Dance, a Blackfoot warrior society dance rooted in ceremony and connection to the land.

As a community, we reflected on the importance of learning from Indigenous voices and traditions, and we were reminded that Every Child Matters.

Cambrian Heights School Terry Fox Run

This week we also honoured the legacy of Terry Fox with our annual school run. Our Grade 6 Terry Fox Run Leaders – Maddy, Enyo, Hrishi, Radwan, Curtis, Sam, and Oliver – played a huge role in this event. They researched Terry’s story, wrote powerful reflections (now on display outside the gym), and even scouted the 3.5 km route through Confederation Park.

Students rose to the challenge we set: if we reached our $1,000 donation goal, seven lucky names would be drawn to pie seven teachers in the face! Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we nearly doubled our goal, raising $1,966 for cancer research in Terry’s name.

A huge thank you to our families for your donations, encouragement, and for joining us on the run. K–1 students ran loops around our school field, while students in Grades 2–6 completed a 3.5 km loop from the school down to Confederation Park and back. If you’d like to see a few highlights – including some very messy teachers – check out our Instagram: @cambrian_heights_cbe.

Fall Equinox Assembly

It has been a full and meaningful week of community gatherings at Cambrian Heights! On Monday, our school came together to celebrate the Fall Equinox – a time of balance, harvest, and giving thanks.

Students reflected on the lessons the land teaches us with the changing of the seasons, and we were reminded that for many Indigenous peoples, the seasons are important teachers of respect, balance, and gratitude.

We listened to student reflections about their learning on the land, and classes also partnered on an art project to honour the Equinox and our shared community.

This celebration was a beautiful reminder that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves – the land, the cycles of nature, and our school community.

Parent-Teacher Conferences & Open House – September 29

On Friday, September 29, teachers will be meeting with families in the morning (8:00–12:00) for scheduled conferences. These meetings are by teacher invitation and request, and allow for focused conversations with families who may benefit from an early check-in.

In the afternoon (1:00–2:30), we invite all other families to join us for an Open House. This is a wonderful opportunity to visit your child’s classroom, connect informally with teachers, and see some of the exciting learning that is already underway this year.

If you are not available on September 29, please know that our teachers are always happy to connect at another time. You can email your child’s teacher directly or call the school office to arrange a meeting. We value strong home-school partnerships and welcome these conversations anytime throughout the year.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us – both online and in-person – for our first School Council meeting of the year. We set a record with nearly 40 families in attendance at our hybrid gathering!

It was wonderful to see so many parents and guardians come together to share ideas, ask questions, and connect around the work happening at Cambrian Heights School. Your involvement and support make such a difference for our students and our school. Together, we continue to build a strong sense of community where every voice matters.

And speaking of making a difference, School Council will once again be running our Apple Fundraiser, which is a delicious way to support school programs! Details have been sent home with students.
