School Update:
Cambrian Heights School Partners with Calgary Meals on Wheels
Grade 2 teacher, Emily McDonald, has partnered with Calgary Meals on Wheels to foster empathy and compassion by creating a meaningful connection with the seniors who benefit from this essential service. Her students are crafting Christmas Cheer cards, or Birthday cards, or Just-For-You cards that will be delivered by Calgary Meals on Wheels during meal services to brighten the days of seniors across the city.
With thousands of students from across Calgary joining the project, we are incredibly proud of Ms. McDonald and her Grade 2 students for participating and demonstrating how even the smallest gestures of kindness can have a big impact. This initiative aligns with our core vale of respect, and allows students to learn the value of empathy, while also giving them an opportunity to uplift and connect with some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
Outdoor Learning Experiences at Cambrian Heights School
As you may have noticed, I’ve been listing Outdoor Learning Experiences on my weekly updates, and I want to take a moment to provide an example of what that entails…
This week, our Grade 5/6 classes visited Confederation Park to engage in a "sit spot" activity, where students observed and wrote about the subtle transformations that occur with the changing seasons. This kind of reflective learning encourages students to slow down, pay attention, and develop a sense of responsibility and respect for the environment.
Land-based learning is also deeply rooted in Indigenous ways of knowing, where the land itself is viewed as a teacher. Indigenous cultures emphasize the importance of living in harmony with the earth, understanding the interconnectedness of all living things, and observing natural patterns.
By incorporating these perspectives into our learning experiences, students gain not only a scientific understanding of nature but also a more holistic view that fosters empathy, stewardship, and a sense of belonging to the land. These experiences allow students to cultivate respect for Indigenous knowledge and traditions, while also building their own capacity to observe, reflect, and learn from the world around them.
Individual Program Plans (IPPs)
Our staff have been reviewing student learner profiles and planning learning targets and strategies for students with an Individual Program Plan (IPPs). IPPs are developed for students who have a diagnosis that has resulted in an Alberta Education special education code. These plans focus on specific, individualized goals for each student, designed to support their unique learning needs.
Students on IPPs will work on their goals during short learning cycles. These goals will be assessed, and we will communicate progress to parents at three reporting intervals:
- Mid-October
- First report card at the end of January
- End of June with the final report card
In the coming weeks, classroom teachers will share the IPPs with respective families for review and signature. If your child has a diagnosis that you feel would warrant an IPP, please contact your classroom teacher.
Lost & Found
Please remind your child to check the lost and found for items they may have misplaced or lost. Our collection of items is beginning to grow! Parents are also welcome to visit the school and see if they recognize any items that belong to their children.
Have a great weekend!

A Message From Cambrian Heights Parent Council and Fundraising Society
Hello Cambrian Heights parents and guardians,
We are very pleased to announce that this year we will be running a new and exciting fall fundraiser!
We have partnered with a high-quality Okanagan orchard, Sun-Oka Fruit Farms, to sell their delicious farm-fresh apples. This century-old family farm has won all kinds of major awards for their fruit, including best apple in Canada for eight straight years! These are the highest quality apples available anywhere! Since we’re sourcing them directly from the farm, you get to buy them at below grocery store prices. Plus, with each box sold, Cambrian Heights will receive $8-$10 back! The funds we raise are so important for providing additional school resources that will enrich and enhance our kids’ academic, physical and social growth.
There are 2 apple varieties available - Ambrosia(10 lbs for $23.95) and Honeycrisp(10 lbs for 29.50).
Feel free to share this fundraiser with your friends and family. Everything is done online, so you won’t have to deal with any of the hassles of collecting money or keeping records. All you need to do is share your personal sales link via email or text message. It’s sweet and simple and only takes a couple minutes of your time. The best part is that you can earn up to $6 off per box of apples when others order off of your sales link! All orders must be in by Wednesday, October 9. Apples will be delivered to the school on Monday, October 21. Please email cambrian.schoolcouncil@gmail.com with any questions that you may have.
