School Update:

Remembrance Day at Cambrian Heights School

On Thursday, our three Grade 5/6 classes led a meaningful Remembrance Day assembly for our school community. The assembly featured touching student-created poetry, including both haikus and free verse, capturing the solemnity of the day with powerful words and reflections. Students also performed two songs, and representatives from each class in the school laid a wreath in honor of those who have served. We observed a moment of silence to pay our respects and shared a video recognizing the contributions of Indigenous soldiers. We extend our gratitude to all parents who were able to join us.

Here are a few examples of the heartfelt poems our students shared:

I am a Poppy in Flanders Fields

I hear people talking about the soldiers who are lost.  And to save them they might have to pay a heavy cost.  Many of them are sacrificing their lives.  But what they don’t know is that their enemies could be armed with knives.

I see strong soldiers rushing through the muddy and grassy fields. They are carrying some bulletproof shields.  There is a slight dusty breeze.  Us poppies shiver in the cold.  It’s like we are about to freeze.

I feel their sweat racing down their face.  It makes me scared and my hear starts to race. Many people make up fake stories and have lied.  They don’t understand but the soldiers have died.

I see the blood dripping from the man’s chest.  I hate to see them sacrifice their lives, but I guess it’s for the best.

I smell dirt that is on the ground.  Some soldiers were lost and some were found.

A Day of Learning: Strengthening Our Teaching Practices

What do teachers do on Professional Learning Days?? On our recent CBE-wide Professional Learning Day, Maatoomsii’Pookaiks | Children First, teachers engaged in activities aimed at deepening our understanding of Indigenous teachings and making classrooms more inclusive for all students. All CBE schools and service units participated in this day of learning and reflection.

At Cambrian Heights School, staff personalized the CBE's renewed Land Acknowledgement, which we’ll share at the Winter Concert. We also listened to Blackfoot teachings from Elder Casey Eagle Speaker on Iikakimat—the value of giving our best—and discussed "wise practices" for supporting Indigenous students and integrating Indigenous perspectives into our teaching.

Our day concluded with teachers exploring how to design lessons through an ethical, respectful lens, and finding ways to assess student learning in ways that honor diverse ways of knowing and understanding. Through these efforts, we continue to grow as educators, committed to creating a thoughtful, inclusive learning environment for every child.

Enjoy the Fall break!
