School Update:

School Development Plan & Parent Feedback

Thank you to the families who recently shared feedback through our School Planning and Engagement Survey shared during on our February School Council meeting.  We heard loud and clear that families who are familiar with our School Development Plan (SDP) feel confident in its focus.  All respondents agreed that it supports both their child’s learning and the learning of all students.

At the same time, responses showed that most families are learning about the SDP through School Council. This tells us we have an opportunity to do a better job sharing updates more broadly, and you can expect to see more information coming through our weekly updates and other communication channels.

The survey also asked about priorities when it comes to school fees and programming. Families placed a high value on experiential learning opportunities such as residencies, swimming, and field trips. There was also unanimous agreement that these experiences are important for student learning and that current fees are reasonable given the benefits.

We appreciate the feedback as it helps guide our planning and ensures we are aligning our work with what matters most to our community.

Recycling Mission at Cambrian Heights!

Students at Cambrian Heights School have taken on an exciting new recycling initiative! Through a partnership between Staples Canada and TerraCycle, all Calgary Staples locations now offer a free in-store recycling program for used writing instruments, including pens, pencils, markers, and highlighters.

To be part of this effort, every classroom in our school has been provided with a special collection container. Students learned that most writing instruments typically end up in the garbage and eventually in landfills, where their plastic components can take a very long time to break down. With this new program, students are actively collecting used items and helping give them a second life. Once containers are full, our staff team delivers them to a nearby Staples for recycling.

It’s been inspiring to see students take ownership of this initiative and think more deeply about their impact on the environment. Small actions can make a big difference, and this is a wonderful example of our school community doing its part to care for the world around us.

Bringing Learning to Life at the Calgary Zoo

Our Grade 5 students had a fantastic day at the Calgary Zoo this week, where all classes took part in the Edutrek Asia program. Guided by a knowledgeable conservation educator, students explored the incredible animals that call Asia home while learning about predator-prey relationships, social dynamics, and the unique adaptations that help animals survive in extreme environments. Along the way, they observed species such as Amur tigers, red pandas, snow leopards, white-handed gibbons, and more!

A heartfelt thank you to our parent volunteers who joined us for the day—your time and support make experiences like this possible. Opportunities like this remind us of the power of learning beyond the four walls of the classroom. When students can see, experience, and connect their learning to the real world, it deepens understanding, builds curiosity, and creates lasting impressions that simply can’t be replicated within the four walls of a classroom.

Have a fantastic weekend!
