School Update:
Fresh Paint, Fresh Play!
With the warmer weather finally arriving, it has been wonderful to see more and more students and community members outside enjoying our school compound, especially our outdoor basketball nets! This week, we welcomed Lazer Line Marking to Cambrian Heights School to refresh and expand several of our outdoor play spaces.
New additions include a painted basketball key along with shooting locations for the popular basketball game Around the World. We also added two brand-new Four-Square courts and repainted two existing courts that had become faded over time. In addition, our Bean Bag Toss game and one of our Hopscotch games received a fresh new coat of paint.
It is important to recognize how this work began. Last week, students in Mr. Dang’s class wrote persuasive letters requesting painted basketball lines on the compound. Their letters were thoughtful, well written, and provided a clear rationale for why these additions would benefit students. Most importantly, they demonstrated initiative, student voice, and a genuine desire to improve our school community. After receiving the letters, I spent time outside looking critically at our compound spaces and could clearly see opportunities to refresh existing games and create even more places for students to play, connect, and be active together.
There is also something special about continuing to invest in traditional playground games like Hopscotch and Four Square. While trends in play come and go, Cambrian students genuinely enjoy these timeless activities, and they continue to bring students together across grade levels in simple, active, and inclusive ways.
This project is a wonderful example of student leadership in action. When students use their voices respectfully, advocate for positive change, and share thoughtful ideas, great things can happen for an entire school community.
Cambrian Heights School Gardening Club Takes Root!
Our Gardening Club initiative, started by Grade 2/3 teacher Ms. Nacinovic, is beginning to take shape as staff work together to refresh and reimagine our naturalization area. What was once a simple concrete circle filled with dirt is being transformed into a purposeful outdoor learning space.
The soil has been tilled and paving stones have been added to divide the garden into four planting sections, with students soon beginning the exciting process of planting and caring for the space together.
Projects like this provide students with so much more than gardening experience. Students learn patience, responsibility, teamwork, and the importance of caring for living things. Gardening also creates opportunities for students to connect with nature, understand where food and plants come from, and experience firsthand how effort, consistency, and care lead to growth over time.
Perhaps most importantly, this work helps students develop a sense of pride and ownership in their school environment. By working together to create something beautiful and meaningful, students are learning that small contributions can have a lasting impact on a community.
Cambrian Heights Community Association Family Bike Day
The Cambrian Heights Community Association is excited to host its Annual Family Bike Day on Saturday, May 30 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the community centre. Families can enjoy free bike tune-ups, activities, and community fun throughout the day.
We are grateful for the strong partnership we continue to share with the Cambrian Heights Community Association. As close neighbours who share community spaces and a commitment to supporting local families, we deeply value the opportunities to work together in creating positive experiences for children and the broader community.
