School Update:
Fresh Fruit Initiative Update at Cambrian Heights School
Over the past two weeks, we’ve had the opportunity to bring our Fresh Fruit Initiative to life across the entire school. Thanks to provincial grant funding through the Government of Alberta’s National Food Program Agreement, all students have enjoyed a variety of fresh options including apples, oranges, kiwi, and even cherry tomatoes (yes… we had some great conversations about that one being a fruit!).
It’s been wonderful to see students trying new things, building healthy habits, and sharing the experience together. This initiative goes beyond just providing food. Through this grant, we’ve also purchased tabletop hydroponic growing systems for every classroom. Later this spring, students will have the opportunity to grow their own plants, deepening their understanding of food, sustainability, and where what we eat comes from.
We will continue providing food after Spring Break, with items such as raisins and Fruit-to-Go bars still to come as we make full use of the funding available to us.
Grade 4 Students Experience World-Class Curling at WinSport
This week, our Grade 4 students had an exciting opportunity to visit WinSport to watch Team Canada compete at the Women’s World Curling Championship. It was an incredible experience to see high-level competition up close and witness firsthand the focus, teamwork, and determination required to perform on the world stage.
Experiences like this help bring learning beyond the classroom, giving students a deeper appreciation for what it takes to pursue excellence while also inspiring their own goals and interests.
A sincere thank you to our parent volunteers who joined us and helped make this opportunity possible. Your support plays a key role in creating meaningful learning experiences for our students.
Student-Led Ramadan Presentation: At the Iftar Table
This week, our school community gathered for a special student-led presentation in celebration of Ramadan. A group of students took the initiative to share their culture and help others better understand the meaning of Ramadan, including the significance of fasting and the traditions that make this time so important.
This presentation is part of our ongoing commitment to learning from one another and celebrating the diversity within our school. Throughout the past month, students have also helped lead learning connected to Black History Month and shared teachings about the Spring Equinox from a Plains Cree perspective.
At Cambrian Heights, we are proud to be a multicultural community, with 35 different languages spoken by our families. As we continue learning together, we are working to walk alongside one another in a good way by honouring Indigenous ways of knowing and the many cultures, identities, and traditions that make up our school. We also recognize that many of our longstanding practices have been shaped by Western perspectives. Our goal is not to replace one with another, but to create space where all voices, experiences, and teachings are seen, valued, and respected.
Parent–Teacher Conferences…Thank You!
Thank you to all the families who were able to join us for Parent–Teacher Conferences this week, whether in person or online. These conversations are such an important part of supporting student success, and we truly value the time you took to connect with your child’s teacher.
If you were unable to attend, or if you would like to continue the conversation, we encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher by phone or email to arrange another time to connect.
Strong partnerships between home and school make a meaningful difference for students. By working together and sharing insights, celebrating progress, and planning next steps we are better able to support each child’s learning, well-being, and growth.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
School Painting Project Underway
I’m excited to share that a school-wide painting project is now underway at Cambrian Heights School! Families who attended in-person conferences may have already noticed that the work has begun, with walls currently being prepped for painting.
This phase of the project will focus on refreshing all our common spaces, including hallways, doors, trim, and bulletin board areas. It’s a great step toward brightening and revitalizing the spaces our students and staff use every day.
In addition, as a school we are investing in further improvements by having six classrooms (those most in need of attention) painted over the summer.
Creating welcoming, well-cared-for environments is an important part of supporting student learning and well-being. The physical space of a school sends a strong message to students about belonging, pride, and the value we place on their experience. It’s important to me that Cambrian Heights is a place where students feel comfortable, respected, and proud of their surroundings each day.
We’re looking forward to seeing these updates come to life and the positive impact they will have across our school.
Have a safe and restful spring break!
Sincerely,
Todd Webber
