School Update:
Pink Shirt Day at Cambrian Heights School
Pink Shirt Day at Cambrian Heights was more than just about wearing pink, it was a school-wide reminder of the kind of community we are committed to being.
Our Grade 6 students took on the responsibility of leading this year’s assembly and did so with maturity and care. They challenged all of us to think about how we respond in difficult moments, not just when things are easy.
During the assembly, they posed the following questions and invited students to share their answers:
- What should you do if you are being bullied?
- What should you do if you see someone else being bullied?
These conversations matter. They help our students build the language, confidence, and strategies they need to stand up for themselves and for others. I was incredibly proud of the leadership shown by our Grade 6 students and equally proud of how thoughtfully our younger students engaged in the discussion.
We invite you to continue this conversation at home. Ask your child how they would respond to those questions. Talk about what courage looks like in real life, especially in small, everyday moments. Often, it’s those small choices that shape a safe and caring school culture.
Please know that all staff in our building shares the responsibility of ensuring students feel safe and supported. We encourage students to speak to a trusted adult if something doesn’t feel right. And as always, if you ever have a concern, please reach out to your child’s teacher or connect with our administrative team. We value the partnership we share with families in creating a respectful and caring learning environment for all.
Kindness is powerful, and at CHS, it’s something we practice together.
A Strong Finish to Black History Month
To close out Black History Month, we gathered as a school to celebrate some of the learning that has been taking place across classrooms. Students highlighted the impact of Black leaders and changemakers, helping us reflect on how individual courage and determination can shape history.
Our Grade 6 students brought history to life through a thoughtful reenactment of Viola Desmond’s stand against racial segregation in 1946. The performance created an important moment of reflection around fairness, dignity, and moral courage. Many students were surprised to learn that Viola Desmond is featured on Canada’s $10 bill, a meaningful symbol of how her legacy continues to be recognized nationwide.
If you are in the school, I invite you to view the student research displayed on the bulletin board near the office. It offers a snapshot of the inquiry, discussion, and critical thinking that helped shape this culminating celebration.
I would also like to recognize our Grade 6 student teachers, Ms. Chap and Ms. Salem, for their leadership in guiding students through this learning. Their thoughtful planning and support helped students deepen their understanding and present with confidence and care.
With gratitude,
Todd Webber
