School Update:

Butterfly Beginnings…Grade 2/3 Science in Action

Students in our Grade 2/3 classrooms recently participated in an exciting hands-on science inquiry by raising Painted Lady caterpillars. Throughout the project, students observed the complete life cycle of a butterfly firsthand, watching the caterpillars grow rapidly, form chrysalises, and eventually emerge as adult butterflies.

This authentic learning experience allowed students to make daily observations, ask questions, record changes, and deepen their understanding of animal life cycles. Students also explored how butterflies fit within food chains and ecosystems, making connections to our science curriculum and discussions about living systems.

One of the highlights of the project was witnessing several butterflies emerge from their chrysalises live in the classroom. After all the butterflies had emerged, students celebrated the completion of the life cycle by releasing them into our school's naturalization space, where they could continue their important role as pollinators.

This memorable experience fostered curiosity, scientific thinking, environmental stewardship, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Thank you to all the Grade 2/3 teachers for taking on this initiative and providing this opportunity for students!

Growing Something Beautiful, Together

If you have visited the area beside our playground recently, you may have noticed an incredible transformation taking place in our school naturalization space. What was once a large concrete pit is quickly becoming a vibrant and welcoming garden space thanks to the vision, hard work, and dedication of Grade 2/3 teacher Ms. Nacinovic and our amazing Administrative Secretary, Ms. Boyce.

Together, they took on the massive task of rejuvenating the area by tilling the soil, creating planting beds, organizing materials, and coordinating the planting of an incredible 340 flowers. Over the past several weeks, classrooms took turns heading outside to help plant and contribute to the project, creating a true whole-school community effort.

The revitalized space has already become an authentic learning environment for students. Most recently, our Grade 2/3 classes used the garden as the setting to release their Painted Lady butterflies after completing their life cycle inquiry, allowing students to watch their learning continue beyond the classroom and into the natural world.

Beyond creating a beautiful outdoor space, projects like this help students develop environmental stewardship, build a sense of belonging and pride in their school, and create meaningful connections to nature and living systems.

Be sure to check out the space next time you visit the school! And for families who live nearby and may be around during the summer months, we warmly invite you to help care for and enjoy the garden. Small acts of watering and tending help keep spaces like this thriving and remind our students that caring for shared spaces is something we do together as a community.

Summer Opportunities with Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth

Families looking for summer opportunities may be interested in two programs being offered by The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth (CBFY). These programs provide students with opportunities to build friendships, stay engaged in learning, strengthen confidence, and connect with their community over the summer months.

Bridge Summer Camp is a three-week program running Monday to Thursday and is open to students currently in Grades 1–9. Two sessions are available:

  • July 6–22
  • July 27–August 13

Registration: https://pci.jotform.com/form/261394134148255

CBFY is also offering the WIN/NOW Summer Camp, a free two-day program (August 18–19) for current Grade 6–11 newcomer students with Permanent Resident status.

Registration: https://form.jotform.com/261324539383258

Please reach out directly to The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth (CBFY) if you have any questions.

Have a great weekend!

 Cambrian Heights Parent Association Update:

Next Meeting: September 2026 (date to be announced)

Email: Cambrian.schoolcouncil@gmail.com

A special thank you to our School Council Chair, Michelle Naundorf, for joining us at our Kindergarten Orientation evening. Michelle took time to introduce herself to new families and share some of the many ways our School Council supports students and staff at Cambrian Heights School.

From funding learning resources and school enhancements to supporting special projects and events, School Council plays an important role in helping enrich the educational experience of our students. Just as importantly, it provides families with an opportunity to learn about what is happening in the school, hear updates from administration, share feedback, and help shape decisions that support our school community.

School Council meets once per month, and we offer a hybrid format so families can participate either in person or online. Whether you are a longtime member of our school community or joining us for the first time, we encourage you to consider getting involved. There is no requirement to take on a formal role. Simply attending meetings, sharing perspectives, and learning more about the school are valuable contributions.

As we begin looking ahead to the 2026–27 school year, we look forward to welcoming new voices and continuing the strong partnership between families and the school. Together, we can help make Cambrian Heights an even better place for students to learn, grow, and thrive.
