School Update:

From Egg to Hatchling: Grade 4 Living Systems in Action

This week, our Grade 4 students wrapped up an unforgettable learning experience as they completed their final week raising and observing live chicks, ducks, and quail as part of their Living Systems unit in Science. Over the past several weeks, students had the unique opportunity to observe the life cycle firsthand…from eggs in the incubator through to hatching and early growth.

Throughout the experience, students became scientists, researchers, writers, and artists. They observed changes over time, asked questions, recorded observations, conducted research, and explored concepts connected to growth, needs of living things, habitats, and life cycles. Students also extended their learning through narrative writing and art, using creativity to reflect on and communicate what they learned.

Experiences like this bring learning to life in powerful ways. Rather than only reading about living systems, students had the opportunity to engage in authentic, hands-on science that encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, responsibility, and wonder. Seeing new life emerge created moments of excitement and connection that helped deepen understanding in ways that are difficult to replicate through textbooks alone.

A big thank you to our Grade 4 team for creating such a meaningful learning experience for students and helping bring science to life in our classrooms.

Our Cambrian Cougars Showed They Can Do Hard Things!

This week marked the completion of our two-week swimming program, with our Grade 1, 2, and 3 students finishing their week of lessons at Highwood Pool. What a fantastic two weeks it has been for our school community!

Over the past ten days, our students demonstrated something we talk about often at Cambrian Heights School…that they are capable of doing hard things! Students walked approximately 3 km round trip each day to and from the pool, adjusted to changing routines, braved cool temperatures and rainy weather, entered the water with courage, and challenged themselves to try new skills and build confidence. Whether students were overcoming nerves, practicing water safety, strengthening swimming techniques, or encouraging classmates, we saw countless examples of bravery, perseverance, and growth.

Swimming is about much more than learning strokes. It helps students develop lifelong water safety skills, build resilience, and gain confidence through experiences that push them outside of their comfort zone. We are incredibly proud of how our students represented themselves and our school throughout the experience.

This opportunity would not have been possible without the support of many people. A sincere thank you to our School Council, whose contribution of more than $10,000 significantly reduced costs for families and made this experience accessible for our students.

A very special thank you to our incredible Education Assistants, who spent long days in and around the pool providing direct support to students who required additional assistance to access this experience successfully. Their care, encouragement, and commitment helped ensure every student had the opportunity to participate and succeed.

Thank you as well to our families for supporting students with early mornings, swimsuits, towels, and helping make these two weeks such a success. We are proud of our Cambrian Cougars and all they accomplished.

Calling All Lost, Lonely & Forgotten Fidget Tools!

Do you have a collection of fidgets at home that have been abandoned in a toy bin, buried under the couch cushions, or simply lost their “cool” factor? We’d love to give them a second chance at life!

Our classrooms are looking to restock our fidget supply, and before we buy new, we thought we’d ask our amazing school community to help us reduce, reuse, and re-fidget.

If you have any gently used fidgets (pop-its, stress balls, tangles, sensory toys, etc.) that your child has outgrown or no longer uses, please send them our way. Your once-forgotten fidget might become another student’s favourite tool for focus and regulation.

Let’s keep those fidgets out of the junk drawer and put them back to work! Thank you for helping us keep our little hands busy and our planet happy. Please have them dropped off to the office!

Last Chance to Check Our Lost and Found!

As we head into the final week of the school year, we wanted to remind families that our Lost and Found still contains a large number of unclaimed items, including jackets, sweaters, shoes, water bottles, and other belongings.

Please take a few moments over the coming week to check in with your child and encourage them to have a look through the Lost and Found if they are missing anything. Families are also welcome to stop by and take a look when visiting the school.

Any items remaining after the end of the school year will be donated.

Thank you for helping us reunite these items with their owners before summer break!

Summer Opportunities with Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth

Families looking for summer opportunities may be interested in two programs being offered by The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth (CBFY). These programs provide students with opportunities to build friendships, stay engaged in learning, strengthen confidence, and connect with their community over the summer months.

Bridge Summer Camp is a three-week program running Monday to Thursday and is open to students currently in Grades 1–9. Two sessions are available:

  • July 6–22
  • July 27–August 13

Registration: https://pci.jotform.com/form/261394134148255

CBFY is also offering the WIN/NOW Summer Camp, a free two-day program (August 18–19) for current Grade 6–11 newcomer students with Permanent Resident status.

Registration: https://form.jotform.com/261324539383258

Please reach out directly to The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth (CBFY) if you have any questions.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Cambrian Heights Parent Association Update:

Next Meeting: September 2026 (date to be announced)

Email: Cambrian.schoolcouncil@gmail.com

A special thank you to our School Council Chair, Michelle Naundorf, for joining us at our Kindergarten Orientation evening. Michelle took time to introduce herself to new families and share some of the many ways our School Council supports students and staff at Cambrian Heights School.

From funding learning resources and school enhancements to supporting special projects and events, School Council plays an important role in helping enrich the educational experience of our students. Just as importantly, it provides families with an opportunity to learn about what is happening in the school, hear updates from administration, share feedback, and help shape decisions that support our school community.

School Council meets once per month, and we offer a hybrid format so families can participate either in person or online. Whether you are a longtime member of our school community or joining us for the first time, we encourage you to consider getting involved. There is no requirement to take on a formal role. Simply attending meetings, sharing perspectives, and learning more about the school are valuable contributions.

As we begin looking ahead to the 2026–27 school year, we look forward to welcoming new voices and continuing the strong partnership between families and the school. Together, we can help make Cambrian Heights an even better place for students to learn, grow, and thrive.
