School Update:

Investing in Learning Through Technology

We’re excited to share that Cambrian Heights School has received 87 brand new Chromebook laptops as part of our ongoing Technology Evergreening Project, which supports the responsible updating of school technology to better serve student learning.

Of these devices, 60 Chromebooks will be housed in two portable carts for flexible classroom use across the school, while the remaining devices will be distributed evenly among classrooms to support day-to-day learning.

This update isn’t about more screen time for students – it’s about purposeful use of technology for creation, not consumption. These Chromebooks will give students more opportunities to create and demonstrate their learning in meaningful ways, such as producing videos, designing presentations, recording podcasts, writing and revising digital texts, coding, and collaborating on shared projects.

The devices also provide important learning supports, including tools like speech-to-text and other accessibility features, helping ensure all students have equitable ways to show what they know and can do.

We’re excited about the ways this technology will continue to support creativity, engagement, and student voice across our school.

Grade 5 Students Explore Wellness with Dr. Gabor Maté

This week, students in Ms. Bower’s Grade 5 class participated in an engaging online discussion with Dr. Gabor Maté as part of his presentation titled Pioneers of the Possible: Trauma, Illness & Stress in a Toxic Culture.

The session invited students to think more deeply about what it means to be “well” in a fast-paced world, where stress can be common and meaningful connection can be challenging. Students explored topics connected to their own lived experiences, including friendships, social media, and emerging technologies like AI.

Through thoughtful questions, discussion, and reflection, students deepened their understanding of well-being, empathy, and compassion – skills that support both learning and healthy relationships now and into the future.

Pulse Dance Studio Residency Brings Movement & Joy

This week, students across the school have been taking part in our Pulse Dance Studio residency, which will continue into next week and culminate in a dance presentation next Friday from 10:00–11:00.

Dance plays an important role in student wellness and engagement, supporting physical health, self-expression, confidence, and connection. Throughout the residency, students have been encouraged to move creatively, take risks, and work collaboratively as they learn new choreography and explore different styles of movement.

Each lesson begins with the instructor grounding students in a shared set of guiding values for the residency…peace, respect, unity, love, and having fun. These values help create a safe, inclusive environment where all students feel supported to participate, express themselves, and enjoy the experience.

We look forward to celebrating students’ learning, growth, and creativity during next Friday’s presentation.

Arts-Centred Learning Open House – Sir John Franklin School

Families with students interested in Arts-Centered Learning may wish to know about an upcoming Open House at Sir John Franklin School, the feeder Arts-Centered Learning school in the north for students in Grades 5–9.

Sir John Franklin School will soon be accepting Expressions of Interest for students entering Grades 5–9 for the upcoming school year. Families are invited to attend an Arts-Centered Learning Open House on Thursday, January 22, from 6:00–7:30 pm. The event is drop-in, and no registration is required.

Have a fantastic weekend!
