School Update:

Did You Know? French Learning at Cambrian Heights

Did you know that Cambrian Heights School has a French Specialist supporting student learning? Last spring, in partnership with Capitol Hill School, we were successful in our application for an Official Languages in Education Program (OLEP) grant—a federal initiative that supports French second-language instruction in schools. Through this grant, we are fortunate to have Danielle Gauthier working with our Grade 4–6 students, while also collaborating closely with classroom teachers to build their confidence and capacity in teaching French as part of the Alberta curriculum.

This week, our French classes brought their learning to life by hosting a Manie Musicale assembly. Manie Musicale is a global French music competition (similar to March Madness), where students explore and vote on Francophone songs from around the world. Each class performed one of this year’s selections, and it was incredible to see the energy, confidence, and joy our students brought to the stage. Performances included Afro Beauté (Ms. Andrews & Ms. White), Nouici (Ms. Fether), Extraordinaire (Ms. Bower & Ms. Frohlich), Aussi Simple Que Toi (Mr. Dang), Et Si (Mr. Close), Toucher La Lune (Ms. Ross), and Je Rentre à la maison (Ms. Thistle).

We are so proud of our students for their enthusiasm and willingness to take risks in their learning. For families looking ahead, Georges P. Vanier School is our designated late French Immersion feeder school for students entering Grade 7 who are interested in continuing their French learning journey.

Bright Smiles Ahead: Learning About Oral Health

This week, we were pleased to welcome hygienists and staff from Inglewood Family Dentist, who spent time with every grade sharing important learning around oral health. Students explored what it means to take care of their teeth, including foods that support healthy teeth, how bacteria develops in the mouth, and the importance of regular brushing.

They also received a helpful overview of what to expect during a visit to the dentist, helping to build comfort and confidence around dental care. As part of the learning, students were given a tracking sheet to support them in monitoring their brushing routines at home.

We are grateful for partnerships like this that help bring real-world learning into our school and support the overall well-being of our students.

Grade 4 Field Trip – National Geographic: Penguins of Antarctica

This week our Grade 4 student had the opportunity to attend a National Geographic Live presentation at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, featuring Dr. Heather Lynch, a quantitative ecologist and National Geographic Explorer.

During the presentation, students learned about the incredible journey to Antarctica, including the famously rough Drake Passage, and explored the unique habitats where penguins live along the Antarctic coastlines. They were introduced to several penguin species, including Gentoo, Chinstrap, Macaroni, Emperor, and Adélie, and discovered how these animals survive in such extreme environments, including what they eat (fish and krill) and where they are most commonly found.

A highlight for many was learning about the technology scientists use to study penguins, including satellites and drones, as well as participating in an engaging Q&A and trivia session.

Have a great weekend!
